On March 9, 2026, Microsoft shipped VS Code version 1.111 as the first weekly stable release. Distinguished engineer Kai Maetzel announced that endgame testing would be "folded into weekly activities." Every single new feature in v1.111 is AI-related. The headline addition: Autopilot mode, where the AI agent works autonomously until a task is completed, auto-approving tool calls, retrying errors, and answering its own questions so "the agent does not stall waiting for a reply."
I have been writing code in some form of IDE since the early 2000s. I have watched Eclipse slow to a crawl, IntelliJ eat the Java world, and VS Code become the default editor for an entire generation. This is different. This is not adding a feature. This is changing the relationship between the developer and the tool.
