Linux has always been there, but the main discussion has begun with AI involvement, especially the controversial feature of Windows Copilot+ PCs: https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2024/05/20/introducing-copilot-pcs/. The main problem or feature is that Microsoft takes screenshots every 2 seconds of your activity and shaping PC usage with this information including advanced search: https://wired.me/gear/microsofts-copilot-pcs-will-screenshot-virtual-activity/. Based on Microsoft, it is safe and never leaves your machine, but how can you guarantee that your laptop is secure when connected to the Internet? All these discussions and big tech movements have started the debate: Does AI feed us up? Do I really need that much AI everywhere as a human? Personally, I can say “No”, especially since there is no force in the World that can take my screenshots every 2 seconds, store and parse them by using proprietary software (I don’t even allow open source in this case). There are dozens of ways to have such a feature without forcing you to take screenshots, so why? Why should I give my screen every 2 seconds? It shows me a sign of “greater” plans, and I don’t want to be a part of them.
Now, AI is also coming to Mac, which is more famous for its security. Although Apple’s architecture has better security, it is not mature and not that great.
I have begun to get e-mails from people who have never tried Linux but have seen my articles about open source and Linux asking: “How can I start using Linux?”. As you can understand, this is a comprehensive question because, in the Linux world, different distros have different tastes in Linux. As a result, I will provide a concise solution in this article. You may not see such an article in Linux because all distros are like brothers or cousins. Of course, there are fans in each distro, especially in community channels/forums, but generally, there is no “perfect” Linux distro. We are using Linux distros based on our usage. It does not end with Linux because we also need to choose the desktop environment — basically, a graphical user interface (most of them also come with some default applications).
