Architecture Lessons from the October 2025 AWS Outage: Why Your System Will Fail (And How to Handle It)

This article isn’t about what went wrong at AWS. It’s about what went wrong in the architectural decisions of the businesses that went offline.

You’ve probably already read the headlines about the October 20, 2025 AWS US-EAST-1 outage. Maybe you saw the takes blaming AI, the finger-pointing at AWS engineers, or the breathless reporting about how “the internet broke.” The news cycle moved on after a few days, as it always does.

But here’s what those articles won’t tell you: this isn’t a story about AWS screwing up. This is a story about architectural choices.

I’m not here to blame anyone. I’m here to talk about what the 1,000+ businesses that went down for 15 hours could have done differently. What you can do differently. Because after 20+ years architecting distributed systems across telecommunications, digital health, media, and conversational AI platforms, I can tell you with absolute certainty: the next major outage is coming. And when it does, the architectural decisions you’re making today will determine whether you experience a 15-minute degradation or a 15-hour disaster.

This article isn’t about what went wrong at AWS. It’s about what went wrong in the architectural decisions of the businesses that went offline. It’s about the patterns that would have kept them running. And it’s about why, in 2025, we’re still making the same preventable mistakes.
